La Borrachita I

La Borrachita Golf Tournament 3-day get-away retreat began in 2010, as a way to keep the family bonds strong between the male cousins and their uncles as they grow older.

Founded by Omar Lopez, the idea was based off La Currada Cincha, another golf tournament that is played among the older generation of the Reza’s, (the Uncles) and all of their childhood friends.  Omar and Paul (Reza) were invited to play in 2009, a rarity since this was an invite-only event. Due to various injuries and schedule conflicts as adults, many of the cousins were not able to compete anymore in the sports they loved such as soccer and other active sports they had enjoyed as kids. Instead, they took up golf and began to take it seriously, enjoying the game while looking to their uncles for guidance and tips.

Being invited to La Currada Cincha was a big deal! Not just anyone was invited to these exclusive events. This was the first time any members of the younger generation were included! “I was super excited,” Omar explains, “I was just starting to get into golf and had always heard of La Currada and all that surrounded it. Now I was going to get to play in it?!?!  It was awesome! Paul and I played horribly!!” he laughs remembering, “We were so nervous but it was so much fun at the same time.” It was a chance to see the bonds these men had, remaining good friends and having so much fun, joking around and sharing memories so many years later as if they were still kids.

At first, Omar simply sent a e-mail out to all the guys in the family, “Let’s get together and play some golf like La Currada.” Little by little however, the idea grew and evolved as questions began to surface as to what to name this new event. “It was Uncle Ruliz who coined ‘La Borrachita Cincha,’ which was later shortened to ‘La Borrachita’ though the uncles still call it by its original name,” Omar explains. The name pays homage to their beloved grandfather, Jesus “La Borrachita” Reza, who was a great sportsman in his day playing professional baseball in Mexico and then later in the minor leagues in the United States. He had earned the nickname based on his style in grounding and throwing the baseball, and was often referred by this in many newspapers. Many in the family attribute their athleticism to him.

Unfortunately, his life was cut far too short, passing away long before any of the cousins were born. As a way of honoring his legacy, and the impact he’s had even in memory, everyone agreed it was only fitting that they name the tournament after him. While Omar founded it, Sergio and Nick have also joined the leadership handling many of the duties from shirts, videos, and the website. In 2011, Sergio took an old photograph of Jesus,

creating an official logo and surprising everyone by having golf shirts made with it. Naturally, it was a big hit and has become a tradition. Every year different colored shirts are presented on the opening night with the date and location also embroidered on them.

The inaugural year the tournament was held in the middle of July in Austin, Texas and had 17 attendees. After nearly melting on the green, they voted to move the event to the spring, while the original Currada Cincha is held every fall. It has grown to include a few close family friends, though the majority remain family-only invites.

The original format included 2 rounds of golf but has since been modified to include an additional round. The overall winner must be present throughout all 3-rounds in order to be crowned champion. Prizes include those for closest to the pin, longest drive, and the lovely toilet trophy for last place. Handicaps are calculated using past rounds with the overall winner having their score compared with their handicap.
